Mold flow is generally a key component of mold development and overall engineering. This is particularly key with complex medical device design, so BMP Medical partners with our local toolmakers to assist with this particular procedure. Mold flow is a way to model how a particular material will flow through a molding process in a theoretical mold. This allows the engineers to see how the melted plastic will flow through the mold under conditions (temperature and pressure) that can be varied to mimic different process parameters. This data allows the toolmaker to consult with the designer in tandem with the customer on possible problem areas and make engineering suggestions to address any issues that are derived from the data analysis. This is often the first step before prototyping is even done to ensure that a part is indeed able to be molded out of a particular material.
